Safeguarding

Swindon's Local Safeguarding Children Board The statutory body responsible for protecting children and young people from significant harm and for promoting their welfare.

NSPCC Safeguarding in schools | NSPCC Learning includes Speak out Stay safe programme, which helps reinforce key messages about abuse and neglect. 

The Speak out Stay safe programme contains:

  1. virtual assemblies for children aged 5-7 and 7-11, available in English, Welsh and BSL
  2. follow on lesson plans with engaging activities and resources to help reinforce and embed key messages
  3. face-to-face workshops for children aged 6-7 and 9-11 

You'll be supported by a local Schools Coordinator who can answer any questions you have about the programme and help you access other support, resources and training.

There is also an adapted six week Speak out Stay safe programme for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and additional needs.

Sun Safety

PSHE Association KS1 and KS2 Keeping safe: sun safety lesson pack provides:

Sun Safe Schools runs a free Sun Safe Schools accreditation which has a policy primary schools can tailor along with assembly plans, letters home to parents and resources for Key stages 1 and : sunsafeschools.co.uk 

Prevention Unintentional Injuries

THINK! which is the government’s designated road safety campaign. provides teaching resources for all year groups. 

The Child Accident Prevention Trust is a national charity in the United Kingdom committed to reducing the number of children and young people killed, disabled and seriously injured as a result of accidents.

ROSPA  has produced an area of their website dedicated to a whole school approach to road safety.

First Aid/Emergency Planning

Wiltshire Air Ambulance aims to educate every child in Swindon and surrounding areas through their Emergency Awareness Training programme, which is an interactive training session for children at primary and secondary schools and delivers a range of lifesaving skills. More information is available at: Emergency Awareness Training - Wiltshire Air Ambulance

St. John Ambulance provides first aid teaching resources and lesson plans for schools. 

First Aid learning for young people. British Red Cross has created free resources for primary and secondary schools to provide skills, and confidence to help in a first aid emergency.

Online Safety

NCA: Exploring Cybercrime for pupils with SEND: Designed for use with pupils aged 12-16 in special or mainstream education settings who have moderate learning difficulties, additional learning needs and/or autism, these fully-accessible lessons will help raise awareness of the risks associated with cybercrime — including the reasons why young people may engage in criminal activity online, and its impact on both individuals and the wider community.

The two lesson plans are available as both PowerPoint and PDF files. Each lesson plan has four main activities for you to choose from, to best suit your pupils’ needs.

There is also accompanying teacher guidance with extensive notes on technological terms and frequently asked questions, as well as wider links to our Planning Framework for Pupils with SEND and the statutory RSHE guidance.

There are pupil resources and activities for each lesson plan, fully optimised for screen readers and with advanced accessibility features built in.
